Fall 2022 - Spring 2023
Ziamara Cevallos
Hi everyone! My name is Ziamara Cevallos, and I am born and raised in New York City. More specifically, I have lived in Queens my whole life. Growing up in Queens has made me who I am today. The city is diverse in every sense of the word, and I would not trade it for anything in the world. Growing up, I was raised by my wonderful parents who are both immigrants from Ecuador. They came here in their early 20’s to live their American dream and have fulfilled that dream tenfold. I have seen them struggle but despite it all, my parents set me up for success and I owe them everything. I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree for Psychology. I attend Queens College as a Junior and am in the process of choosing what I will be specializing in in the near future.
I am passionate about helping others and understanding people. I believe Latino’s are extremely underrepresented in this country and it is an honor to be part of a team that educates and helps my community. As for my future endeavors, I plan on studying abroad for my Senior year at Queens College to enrich my education. Following this, I will be enrolling for my Master’s in hopes of specializing in a specific field and continuing to help others. |
Luz Garcia
My name is Luz Garcia, and I am a sophomore. I am majoring in Sociology and obtaining a minor in Criminology. I was born in Ciudad Hidalgo, Michoacan, Mexico, and immigrated to New York when I was six months old. Firsthand, I saw the injustices that undocumented migrants face and the challenges facing our community. My experiences inspired me to pursue a career field where I can help undocumented families receive support. I also want to get into the criminal justice system and advocate for prison reform and call out the inhumane conditions of prisons in the United States. I look forward to being a U-LAMPER this year where I can help families and children and most importantly, give them hope and reassurance that they belong here and that their legal status does not make them any less than those with one. When I was undocumented, I had a lot of help around me and it only feels right to return that support.

Mixdale Machuca
My name is Mixdale Machuca, and I am a senior at John Jay, double majoring in Law and Society and Latin American and Latinx Studies. I was raised in New York, but Morelos, Mexico, is where I was born. I plan to pursue a career in law to better assist the undocumented community in the United States. My time as a ULAMPer will allow me to gain experience and insight into the asylum process for unaccompanied minors. The dexterities I acquire from ULAMP will aid me in the future as an immigration attorney, as I will be equipped with the knowledge to give back to my community.

Ariana Padilla
Ariana is a junior majoring in Law and Society with a minor in Latin American Studies. She is a proud Ecuadorian first-generation immigrant who strives to become an attorney in order to support and understand the relationship that the Latinx community has built and developed with the legal system. Becoming a U-LAMPer will allow her to get involved firsthand with the experiences of the immigrant community and the legal processes while also empowering her to support and assist undocumented youth through what she knows is a very confusing and lengthy process.

Nelsy Bravo
Nelsy Bravo was born in the Bronx, New York and moved to Boston, Massachusetts with her mother when she was eight years old. Nelsy is currently a third year student at Northeastern University and is in the process of getting her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology, while also hoping to get her Master’s degree in Criminology. Growing up, Nelsy’s mother has always been her biggest role model because of the qualities that she possesses. Nelsy values and practices these qualities every day, such as being a hard worker, a helping hand, and positive-minded. Immigration Law is something that has always interested Nelsy because through her parents, she has witnessed the challenges that come with being an immigrant in the United States. Overall, Nelsy is hoping to use the skills she has acquired to help Latin American immigrants with the difficulties they deal with when immigrating to the US.
