U-LAMPERS in Action
December 2019
Vicarious Trauma Training
Working with immigrant youths and interpreting and translating difficult stories can be emotionally taxing on the individuals who work with them. In many cases, individuals may develop vicarious trauma when they hear or read about the violence and abuse that forces on many unaccompanied minors to flee their home countries and communities. This workshop addresses this reality for our
U-LAMPers, as well as introduces techniques that our U-LAMPers can use to de-stress after assisting immigrant youths and attorneys. Led by Safe Passage Project Supervising Social Worker Samantha Norris, as well as additional Safe Passage Project Social Work staff, this workshop provided essential training to our U-LAMPers who are working across three different sites with immigrant youths. |

Summer 2016
WHEELS Know Your Rights Presentation
The eighth graders at the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School were part of an expedition in which they were examining the different lenses of justice. Prior to the presentation, the kids had been doing observations about justice in their communities and watching documentaries about justice. The Know Your Rights presentation was done to give the students a better understanding of the theme of justice through the lens of immigration from a professional's perspective. During the presentation, ULAMPER, Nathaly Ramirez used the life of ULAMPER, Arlienny Hernandez as an example of immigration through the lens of justice. She discussed how Safe Passage Project helped Arlienny obtain U.S. citizenship and how it has opened doors to many opportunities. Nathaly also discussed the current Department of Homeland Security raids. Safe Passage Attorney, Juan Chiquillo, discussed constitutional rights, such as the fourth and fifth amendment, as well as SIJS, Asylum, VISAs and DACA. The students who attended the presentation had the opportunity to ask questions regarding their rights and immigration law. The students were very engaged in the discussion especially since they already had brief knowledge about the topic. WHEELS teachers, social workers, and school administrators also engaged in the conversation.

Holiday Party
The Safe Passage Project in partnership with U-LAMP hosted its Second Annual Holiday Party. The Safe Passage staff and their clients were able to take a break from the courthouse and enjoy a nice afternoon of crafts, a classic game of loteria, and a movie screening of Elf. Holiday joy and laughs filled the room. After all the fun and games, the clients were able to take home donations that were made to Safe Passage for their clients. Many of the donations included: books, hats, scarves, and coats. Many clients at the party admitted that this will be their first winter and are very excited to see snow for the first time.
Special thanks to Emily McKhann, Mercedes Olivares and Barclays, and John Jay College’s ¡Adelante! Program for their donations! |
